It has been quite a long time since I came to Rome.  I have been to Rome only once before when I was in my teens - that is more than a few decades ago.  Since then there was once occasion to come to Rome, but unluckily things turned out that I had to come back to Japan and gave up visiting Rome.  This time, I was in transit from Egypt to Tokyo at Rome, where I had about 6 hours in town.
There are dozens of things to see in Rome, but I chose to visit Via Appia Antica, the ancient Appia Road.  This is the first full-fledged regional road with pavement and tree lining.  This became the model for the later Roman roads, as well as the model for modern regional roads.  Without seeing this, it would be difficult to discuss modern infrastructure, I thought.
Thus I took a taxi and told the driver to go to Via Appia.  But where in Via Appia?  The road is long, and the driver did not know where to go, neither did I.  So I just told the driver to go to the San Sebastiano Basilica, but it turned out that this was far before the ancient part of Via Appia.  You should have directed to go to Cecilia Metella Mausoleum instead.  I had to walk about 2 kilometers from the basilica.
Via Appia had quiet and plain impression, where ancient Romans might appear in their Roman clothing and wearing swards.
