　ローマの郊外に、ローマ帝国時代の都市が一つ、川の運ぶ土砂にうずもれ ていた。それがティベレ川の河口近くにあるオスティアである。現在あ る都市と区別するために、古オスティア、オスティア・アンティカと呼ばれる。ローマからは地下鉄ピラミデ駅から郊外電車に揺られて50分ほどで行くことが できる。実は川を挟んで、ダビンチ国際空港は近いので、空港からタクシーで行くという方法も考えられる。試したことはないけれど。
　オスティアは紀元前7世紀の中ごろ、テヴェレ川の河口近くにローマ初の港を築いたことに始まる。その後、港がテヴェレ川の砂に埋まっては、新港を開削す ることを何度か繰り返しながら、ローマの主要港として発展した。その最盛期は紀元１〜3世紀といわれ、その後、紀元４、5世紀に廃れ始め、9世紀には完全 に打ち捨てられた。そのオスティアが発掘されるのは19世紀以降となる。ローマ時代の都市の遺跡としては、ポンペイと並ぶものだ。
　古代ローマ人になったつもりで、オスティアの町を歩いてみるのもいいかもしれない。

    In the suburb of Rome there was a roman city buried in mud and sand for more than one thousand years.  That is called Ostia, located near the mouth of the Tiber River.  To distinguish from the modern city of Ostia, the old one is called Ostia Antica.  You could switch to the suburban railway at the Piramide Station on the Metro of Rome.  In fact, the Ostia Antica is almost across the river from the Da Vinci International Airport, so you could probably take a taxi from the airport, though I have never tried this yet.
    The history of Ostia traces back to B.C. 7, when a new  port was built there.  Ever after, the port on the Tiber continued to be filled up with mud and sand from the river and rebuilt again and again..  The city flourished to its peak around 1 to 3 century, where various urban facilities were built.  After then the city started to decline in the 4th and 5th century, and at last in 9th century the city was totally abandoned. 
    It may be good to stroll around Ostia, feeling like an ancient Roman yourself.
