　いつか機会があったら、ローマ時代の水道を見たいとずっと思っていた。 水道は道路とともにローマが力をいれた都市のインフラの最たるものだからだ。問題は、普通のガイドブックには水道の場所なんて書いてないことだ。やっと ちょとだけ記述があったガイドブックを見つけ、大雑把な地図をたよりに地下鉄で近くにあると思しき駅まで行った。駅員さんに聞いても、知らないなという。 仕方ないからタクシーに乗ろうと運転手にガイドブックの写真を見せる。すると、「こんなの知らない」という。何人か運転手を捕まえて聴いてみると、一人が 公園じゃないと、という。こういう橋があったよ、と。そこに行ってくれと頼むが、「何にもないし、面白くもない」と抵抗する。いいから行って！と無理やり 向かった。地下鉄のジュリオ・アグリコール駅から歩いていけると知ったのは後のことだ。
　それでやっと公園について水道橋と対面した。2000年の時を隔てているが、その水道の一つは、今でもローマに水を送っているマルキア水道だ。その南に 高々とした高架の水道橋があって、こちらは半分以上が崩壊しているが、これはおそらくクラウディオ水道。こういう遺跡が緑豊かな公園にひっそりと存在す る。ローマは遺跡とともに生きる都市だ。

   I had long wanted to visit the Roman Aqueduct if there was a chance.. Water works are one of the infrastructures that ancient Romans endeavored with their power and wealth. I had little idea where I should be to see a real aqueduct, and there was one guide book that carried some vague description of Roman water works in the eastern suburb of Rome.  So I got on the metro and got off where I though was near the aqueduct.  I asked the station stuff, but they did not know.  I asked taxi drivers, but few of them had any idea where the ancient aqueduct was.  One taxi drives said he knew a bridge which looks like the one in the book.  So I asked him to take me there.
    Then I met with the Roman water works there in the park.  One water work is probably the Marcia Aqua which is in operation now after 2000 years.  Another high elevated aqueduct is probably the Claudio Aqua, which is almost ruined with some leftovers.  Rome live with the ruins from the past.
