フランスの首都、パリ。花の都とも、芸術の都とも、憧れの都ともいわれる。私はそのパリにはなぜかあまり縁がなく、一度だけ、それも二日だけ行っただけである。短いパリ滞在の時間のなかで、それでもパリをできるだけ歩きたいと思い、早朝のまだ暗いうちから凱旋門をくぐり、オルセーの河畔を歩いた。やっと半日ほど確保した自由な時間には、モンマルトルやサンマルタン運河などを歩きまわった。
　パリを俳諧しながらカメラを向けると、不思議とこの町は「絵になる」。どこが、という個別の場所ではなくて、ちょっとした路地や広場が、通りや橋が、みなお洒落で素敵なのだ。昔の建物や通りが残っているが、そこで営まれる今の暮らしは古い建物の雰囲気とうまく合っている。東京のように古いものは古いもの、新しいものは新しいもの、と空間が分離していくのではなく、パリでは古い空間の上に新しい空間が共存していく。時間の流れの上に重層的な作られた町がパリなのだ。

    Paris is the capital of France.  Some people call it the city of arts; for others Paris is the yearning.  I have little chance to visit Paris, except for a one short trip for merely two days.  During this short stay, I set out early in the morning to Arch of Triumph and walked along the Seine.  In the half day free time, I strolled around Montmartre and St. Martin Canal.
    Trotting and shooting photographs in Paris, I noticed that Paris is very picturesque.  Not just in specific locations, but every little lane or square, street or bridge, is fashionable and cool.  Old buildings are preserved, and the life taking place there is consolidated with the old.  Paris has new layers of space in harmony with the underlying old ones unlike in Tokyo, where the old things and the new are separated spatially.  Paris is the city composed cumulatively through the lapse of time.
