オランダがアジア貿易から富を蓄積した17世紀、画家・フェルメールはこのデルフトで生まれ、名画を残した。名画「デルフトの眺望」は、デルフトの城門や時計台、跳ね橋、そして空にそびえる新教会の塔が描かれている。
　ネーデルラントとは「低い土地」という意味だが、デルフトも市内に運河が網の目のように張り巡らされている。低地を都市にする時、水はけを改善するために掘られたのが運河である。ところどころで運河にかかる橋を渡りながらデルフトの都市を散策すると、ふと連合東インド会社の略号であったVOCと掘り込まれた銘のある建物に遭遇したりする。
　デルフトには黄金の世紀のオランダが生きている。

    When the Netherlands were gathering wealth from the Asian trades in the 17th century, the painter Johannes Vermeer was born in Delft and painted masterpieces.  The work entitled "View of Delft" depicts city gates, a clock tower, a bridge and the tower of the New Church in the background.
   The Netherlands mean low lands.  Delft has a network of canals in the city, which were an instrument for draining the low lands to build a city.  When you walk in the city crossing bridges here and there, you may see a building that used to house the West Indies Company.  Emblem of VOC indicates this.
    Delft embodies the golden century of the Netherlands .
