ハイデルベルクは14世紀初頭に建造が始まったといわれるハイデルベルク城が有名だ。古城は山の中腹にあり、そこからはネッカー川が眼下に見下ろせる。赤いタイルの甍が連なる町並みの俯瞰景は見事なものだ。またハイデルベルク大学はドイツで最古の大学で、現在でも多くの若者が学ぶ大学町でもある。古城の対岸には、ゲーテはヤスパースなどハイデルベルクゆかりの哲人たちが物思いにふけりながら散歩したであろう、哲学の小道がある。京都の同名の道のオリジナルでもある。
　ドイツのフランクフルト空港は、乗り換えで使うことが多かった。そのフランクフルト空港から直行バスがあると知って、何度かハイデルベルクを訪れた。朝夕は1時間に一本くらいが運行し、所要時間は1時間ほど。半日の時間があれば、ぜひとも足を伸ばしたい中世の町である。

    Heidelberg is famous for the old castle, that was said to be built since early part of 14th century.  The castle is in the halfway to the hilltop, and the lookout view from there over the old town with red tiles is magnificent.  Heidelberg has the oldest university in Germany.  Many a young people live and study in this city.  On the hill opposite the castle is the Philosopher's Way, where the authors such as Goethe and Jaspers must have strolled.  This is the original of the lane with the same name in Kyoto, Japan.
    I sometimes use the Frankfurt Airport in transition.  Learned that there is a direct service from the airport, I visited Heidelberg a few times.  The bus operates almost every hour, and takes about an hour to arrive.  If you have a half day in transit, Heidelberg is a recommended destination.
