フランクフルト、ドイツではフランクフルト・アム・マイン、つまりマイン川のほとりのフランクフルトとなる。多くのヨーロッパ行きの飛行機が最初に着く都市にして、ヨーロッパの金融中心ともいわれる。
　それでもフランクフルトってどういう街？と聞かれると、一瞬答えに詰まってしてしまう。ひとことでこう、という形容詞が見つからないのだ。古い建物もあるけれど、新しい街のような気もする。おしゃれ、ともいいにくい。大都市ではあるけれど、あまり賑やかでもない。むしろ静かなる大都市という印象。そうそう、ゲーテの生家が有名だ。
　フランクフルトには飛行機の乗り継ぎで何度か滞在した。なにか強烈なインパクトは欠けるが、暮らしやすそうな街ではある。それでも街を歩いていると、ふと懐かしいような気分になる。どこかで見たような、デジャヴュの感覚。

 .    Frankfurt, or in German Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the Main), they call.  Frankfurt is the first port for many tourists traveling by airplane bound for Europe, and Frankfurt is said to be the financial center of Europe.
    Nonetheless, when asked what kind of a city Frankfurt is, I find myself unable to give a quick answer.  In short, there is no single adjective suitable for Frankfurt.  Frankfurt has a lot of historic buildings, but it also looks to be new.  The city might not look to be too fashionable.  Despite the large size, the city does not look to be very busy.  On the contrary, my impression of the city is calmness.  Oh I almost forgot - this is the city where Goethe was born and lived his early life.
     I visited Frankfurt a few times in transit.   Although it may lack in clear-cut characteristics,  Frankfurt seems to be a good place for easy and confortable living.  Walking in the street, I had some feeling -  nostalgic, maybe.  Things looked common -  I had seen them before elsewhere.  A persistent feeling of deja-vu followed through.
