スペインの地中海沿岸の町、アリカンテ。この一帯の海岸地域、コスタ・ブランカ（白い海浜）の中心をなすリゾート都市である。アリカンテは古くはカルタゴの時代に城砦都市として築かれて以来、ローマ帝国やイスラム支配を受け、現在にいたる。ローマ人はここを「光の都」(Lucentum)と呼び、ギリシア人は「白い砦」(Akla Leuka)と 呼んだそうだ。地中海の眩しいばかりの光、コスタ･ブランかの白い浜辺、そしてサンタ･バルバラ城の白い砦。アリカンテは白い光に満ちた町だ。
　アリカンテに行った目的は、この地から北西約２０ｋｍにあるチビという村の郊外にあるチビ･ダムという「幻のダム」を取材するためだった。このダムは13世紀に建造された当時は世界で最大級のダムで、長らくこの記録は破られなかった。とはいえ、日本では文献に名前が出ることはあっても現地の写真はほとんど紹介されていない。幸運にもダムまでたどり着き、管理組合の人からお話を聞くことができた。このダムもこの地域で算出する石灰岩を積んだものだ。白い光の町は、つまり白い石灰岩の町であるのかもしれない。

    Alicante is  coastal city on the Mediterranean Sea in the heart of the Costa Blanca coastal resort.  The history of Alicante traces back to the time of ancient empire of Cartago, when the city was established as a bastion city.  Ever since then, the city came under the control of the Roman Empire and then the Islam.  The Romans called this city Lucentum, the city of light, and the Greek called this Akla Leuka, or the white citadel. With dazzling light of Mediterranean, white sandy been of Costa Blanca and the white citadel of Santa Barbara,  Alicante is indeed the city in white.
    The purpose of my visit here is an old dam called Tibi located 20 km northwest of Alicante off the village of Tibi.  This dam, built in the 13th century, is widely known in documents but little few images have been available.  Our team has made it to the site of the dam, and had a chance to talk with the operating body of the irrigation dam.  This dam utilized the local white limestone cut into square blocks.  The city in white may actually be a city in white limestone, so to speak..
