　 ヴェニスといえば、映画好きの人ならヴィスコンティの「ヴェニスに死す」を、文学好きの人ならトーマス・マンの原作やシェークスピアの「ヴェニスの商人」 を、音楽好きの人ならヴィヴァルディーを思い出すのかもしれない。都市の呼び名としても、水の都といった普遍的な旅 行パンフレット的な表現があるかとおもえば、アドリア海のミストレスというあだ名もある。それだけヴェニスは人々の想像を掻き立てる都市なのだろう。 一年ほど前、そのヴェニスに初めて行く機会を得た。ヴェニスには一泊という強行軍のスケジュールではあったが、朝から半日、この類まれな都市を歩き回っ た。
　ヴェニスという都市は、アドリア海の奥のラグーン（潟）を埋め立てて作られた海上都市である。大きくS字に蛇行して中央部を貫くカナール・グランデと、 それにつながる無数の小運河（リオ）の網の目に囲まれた、無数の埋め立て島というのがヴェニスの実態である。とはいえ、ヴェニスが建造されたのは６世紀の 後半と言われ、初代の総督が任命されたのは７世紀末というから、多くの陸上の都市よりもずっと長い歴史の潮を乗り越えて今日のヴェニスがある。
　ヴェニスの主要な交通はいまでも船である。都市は運河からアクセスるように作られているから、大通りがカナール・グランデで、そこにつながる小運河が通 りということになる。陸には水上交通を補う狭く枝分かれした路地とところどころの広場しかない。技術の時代にありながら、自動車は一切入れない。運河をま たぐ橋は太鼓橋、道路は路地ばかりだから、物理的に入れないようのだ。
　時間があるならば、まず陸の路地をたどってヴェニスの中心であるサンマルコ広場に行ってみるとよい。観光地でありながら、路地にはs商店があり生活の臭 いさえも感じられる。そして歩きつかれたらボートで運河を行く。ヴェニスに死すで老作曲家が錯綜の中を愛すべき人の影を追う、あの運河のシーンが思い出さ れる。
　ヴェニスは期待を裏切らない。それどころは、路地を縦断しながら私はこのヴェニスの華麗な魅力の虜になっていた。

    Talking about Venice, a movie lover would think about "The Death in Venice" by Visconti; a book lover would remember Thomas Mann's original novel or "The Merchant of Venice" by Shakespeare; Vivaldi concerti would revive in the mind of a music lover; a historian may wonder about the ups and downs of the Mediti family.  Many a people call this city the water city while some others may use the sensual nickname, Mistress of Adriatic.  Thus much, Venice spurs the imagination of people.  About a year ago, I had a chance to visit Venice for the first time in my life.  Short as it was, I chose to walk through this unusual city for half a day.
    Venice started as a man-made city on land fill in a lagoon at the end of Adriatic Sea.  A web like network of the Grand Canal and adjoining small "rio",  together with the numerous reclaimed islands compose the city of Venice.  The city, though, has a longer history than most of ordinary land side cities, as it was built as early as the end of 6th century, and the first governor was appointed in the end of 7th century. 
    The major transport means in Venice are boats, even today.  As the city is built in a way to be accessed from the water side, the boulevard is the Grand Canal, and streets are smaller canals.  On the land there are only back alleys to supplement the water transport.  In the age of technology, no vehicles can enter Venice as bridges have stairs and alleys too narrow. 
    If you have time, you may as well walk through the city to St. Marks Square, following the zigzagging but lively alleys on the land side. You may find shops and food stalls along the way.  If tired, switch to water side by hiring a boat.  You may recall the old composer chasing the spooky image of the loved one, in "The Death in Venice" movie.
    Venice would not betray your expectation.  I myself was wholly enchanted by the glamorous townscape of Venice.
