1961年8月13日、ベルリン市民は町のあちこちに文字通り壁が建てられるのを驚きの目でみていただろう。ブロック塀や鉄条網、それまで自由に行き来できた場所が封鎖されていった。東西冷戦を象徴するような突然の出来事だった。それ以降、ベルリンというひとつの都市に、東ベルリンと西ベルリンという隔絶された異なる政体を抱く半都市が二つ、共存することになった。目抜き通りを跨ぎ、市街地を閉ざす、都市の壁の異様。
On 13th August, 1961, the Berliner must have been watching the emerging new walls in the city with astonishment. With concrete blocks and boobed wires the city that could be walked through became blocked in places. The sudden rise of the wall was a symbolic event in the cold war. Ever since then, Berlin became a composite of two half cities - West Berlin and East Berlin - each governed by the different political body. Walls blocking avenues and separating land plots provided astounding views of the divided city.
永遠に続くかとも思われた東西分断も、ソ連邦崩壊とともにあっけなく終息した。その時は、やはりあっけなくやってきた。1989年11月9日に東ドイツ政府は観念したのか、東西ドイツ国境を開放すると発表した。市民がゲートに押しかけ、ついには壁に上りハンマーで壁を打ち砕いた。
長く待ちわびた東西ドイツの統一。1991年、ドイツ国会はドイツの新たな首都を僅差でベルリンに決めた。
壁崩壊から10年後の1999年11月、ベルリンを始めて訪れた。ベルリンには分断時代の遺構が残る一方、新首都建設があちこちで進んでいた。長らく二つに割れていた都市が、今ひとつになろうとしている。二つのドイツが一つになり、その首都が造られようとしていた。涙と血のにおいをようやく振り払い、悲しみや苦しみを癒しながら。
When the division looked to last forever, it ended abruptly with the deterioration of Soviet Union. The moment came all of a sudden, almost. On 9th November, 1989, the East Germany Government said it would open the Berlin border gates. Citizens rushed to the border gates, and finally stroke the walls into pieces with large hammers
At the wake of the long-awaited German integration, a decision was made in the Parliament to appoint Berlin as the new capital city at a very close ballot.
In November 1999, I had a chance to visit Berlin after 10 years since the collapse of the walls. While remaining signs of separation were to be seen in the city, there were new construction everywhere to build the new capital. The city that had been split to two sub-cities was first in the history proceeding to merge, putting away the blood and tears, healing the dispareand hardship.
