ドイツのパッサウで国境を越えると、ドナウ川はオーストリアに入る。
　最初にドナウを出迎える都市はリンツだ。モーツアルトの交響曲「リンツ」（36番）の書かれた都市であり、ブルックナーが教会付きのオルガン奏者として半生を過ごした場所でもある。源流から400キロ程しか来ていないが、すでにドナウ川は川幅300メートルを越える大河に成長していた。
　ドナウ川は修道院で有名なメルクの付近で丘陵地帯を削り込んだワッハウ渓谷に入る。世界遺産にも指定されたワッハウ渓谷には、葡萄畑が山麓に広がるかと思えば、石でできた古城が川辺や山麓に見え隠れする。ところどころには急流が渦巻くような場所もあって、船旅を楽しませてくれる。クレムスという船着場で下船して、ウィーンに向かう。　
　ウィーンはハプスブルク帝国の首都が置かれた東欧世界への入り口（回転扉、と呼んだ人もいる）の都市だ。ウィーン子に人気の地元音楽家・ヨハン・シュトラウス2世の「美しく青きドナウ」はあまりにも有名だ。しかし、オーストリアのドナウ川の流れを見ていても、ほとんど「青い」と感じたことはなかった。むしろ茶色に濁った水面を見ることが多かった。

    After passing through the city of Passau, the Danube river enters into Austria.  
    The fist city that welcomes the river is a city called Linz.  This was the place where W.A Mozart wrote a symphony named after this city, Linze (No. 36), and Anton Bruckner spent half of his life as a organist at the Old Church.  After travelling about 400 km from its origin, the Danube had grown to be a large river with the width more than 300 meters.
    The Danube rivers enters a gorgey in a mountainous area called Wachau Valle.  This valley, registered in the UNESCO World Herigate list, is full of surprises with grape fields on the sides of hills or old castle near the river or near the top of hills here and there.  In places the boat was stirred in turbulence, which adds to the pleasure of voyage.  Going ashore at Krems, we set out for Vienna.
    Vienna is the gateway to the eastern Europe.  The Viennese waltz entitled "The Blue Danube" is world famous, but looking at the river in Austria, I seldom came across with blue water.  Most of the time, the river water was brownish, despite the famous waltz.
