ハンガリーを過ぎドナウ川はさらに、ユーゴスラビアやブルガリアを経てルーマニア平原を流れ下る。私たちはブダペストからブカレストまで飛行機で近道した。
　ルーマニアはローマ帝国の国であり、国民はラテン系である。言葉もイタリア語に近いのだそうだ。独裁者チャウシェスクが君臨して、暴挙の限りを尽くした国でもある。鉄のカーテンが一挙に崩壊した1989年、ルーマニアではテレビカメラの前で民衆が大統領府に迫り、軍隊に守られた独裁政権を倒す「ルーマニア革命」を経験する。生中継された世界で始めての革命といわれた。
　ブカレストから広大なルーマニア平原をバスで走り、黒海に向かうドナウを追う。世界遺産にも指定されたドナウデルタの入り口、トルチャについたのは、もう夜のとばりの中だった。翌朝、漆黒の闇を船にのってドナウデルタを下る。ドナウが黒海に流れ込むあたりで、黒海から昇る朝日を見よう、という野心的な計画。しかしそう上手くはいかないのが旅の常だ。途中でエンジンが故障、修理しているうちに朝日は地平線の上にあった。
　このドナウデルタでドナウ川は黒海に流れこむ。いや流れ込むというよりは、広く大きな黒海の水に飲み込まれて一つになる、といった方がいいかもしれない。全長２８４０ｋｍのドナウの流れはここに終わる。

    After passing　through Hungary, the Danube river trespasses Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, and flows down on the Romanian Plain.  We made a shortcut from Budapest directly to Bucharest by air.
    . Romania is a nation of the Roman Empire, and the nationals are Latin in origin.  The language spoken is said to be somewhat similar to Italian.  This is the nation viciously controlled by a dictator, Ceausescu.  In 1989, however, Romania was  in the rise of nationwide zest for democracy, and incidentally saw its dictator fall down when the people rushed to him in front of the military force at the risk of their lives.  This was the first revolution in the world history that took place in front of a TV camera that reported the event simultaneously to the world.
    From Bucharest, we rode on a bus to cross the plain to catch up with the Danube river.  When we arrived at Torcea at the gateway of the Danube Delta, the darkness of the night was all around.  In the following morning, we set out on a boat for the Danube Delta, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.  Our expectation was to see the sunrise from the Black Sea, but the reality is always not as easy as the plan - due to an engine trouble, the morning sun was unexpectedly over the horizon when the trouble was fixed.  
    At the tip of the Delta, the Danube river was to flow into the Black Sea - or rather, it got swallowed by and merged with the Black Sea.  The 2,840 km long journey of the Danube concluded in this point.
